Breeds Prone to Legg-Calve-Perthes
Legg-Calve-Perthes disease is a condition where the blood supply to the femoral head (top of the thigh bone) is disrupted, causing the bone to deteriorate and the hip joint to collapse. It primarily affects small and toy breed dogs under one year of age.
Symptoms
Progressive lameness in one hind leg, pain when moving the hip joint, muscle wasting in the affected leg, and carrying the leg or refusing to bear weight on it.
Prevention & Management
No prevention exists for this genetic condition, but early surgical intervention (femoral head ostectomy) has excellent outcomes. Choose breeders who screen for the condition and avoid breeding affected animals.
